Public accounting offers students the opportunity to start a professional career in business by providing them a comprehensive understanding of financial and operational processes of companies in many different industries.  A job in public accounting is often the stepping stone to a job as accounting manager, controller, or even CFO of other companies.  Unlike the consulting industry, public accounting generally doesn’t demand heavy travel, nor does it require the long hours to which investment bankers are accustomed.
