With so many schools offering MBA degrees, it may be difficult to know which one to choose. From online‐based courses to night classes tailored to the working individual, all sorts of options seem to be available to the enterprising student.
However, for those interested in attending a large, internationally known, yet private institution located in a bustling world financial center, the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University (NYU) is one school to consider. Situated in Greenwich Village in downtown Manhattan, the Stern School of Business offers a variety of MBA programs ranging from part‐time to dual degree for the ambitious business student.
But what differentiates Stern from others is its flexible, design‐it‐yourself curriculum and study abroad option for full‐time MBA students. Stern’s flexibility is found in its wide array of elective options offered to its attendees, such as Game Theory and Business Strategy, Competitive Strategy in the Marketplace, Women in Business Leadership, and Business in Music and Film. The school boasts that it offers more elective courses than any other business school with just a few exceptions. And during their second year, students are given the opportunity to take advantage of one of NYU’s internationally oriented programs.
Potential applicants to Stern may be interested to learn that no classes are held on Fridays. Instead, Stern students attend workshops, panel discussions, and seminars on that day. These activities are a part of NYU’s unique Career Development Program (CDP). CDP, as the name suggests, is designed to provide MBA students with the tools needed for a successful career. The program offers services such as mock interviews, resume critiques, and Q&A sessions to all students. An additional plus to the Stern curriculum is its summer internship requirement, which the school hopes will provide students with valuable industry experience and networking connections.
In their first year, Stern students are required to take foundational core and breadth courses in addition to elective classes. Stern’s core curriculum includes three mandatory courses: Statistics & Data Analysis, Financial Accounting & Reporting, and Professional Responsibility. In addition, students
are also required to take five out of seven core classes the school offers.
In their second year at Stern, students are encouraged to enroll in specialization courses or to take advantage of the diverse array of elective classes offered. All Stern students graduate with a MBA in General Management, but are also given the opportunity to select up to three areas of specialization (shown below).
As second‐years, students have the option of taking part in an international program. Recognizing the importance of understanding and competing in the global marketplace, Stern offers an assortment of international programs including study abroad, intensive courses about doing business in foreign countries, as well as a NYU Stern/HEC France Dual Degree Program, which grants
